(… and the goodreads Reading Challenge 2015)

I probably should have taken more time writing this, I have been thinking about it for a while. But here are my thoughts, unfiltered.

Okay, so, you know how it is. It’s your birthday, people give you money, you go to the next-best book-shop to spend it all. Well, I cannot go to the next-best, ‘cause they only do German, so I went to town and into Thalia. They have one mini-shelf with English books in which I usually find one I’d like to read. Or two. You know, I’m flexible like that.

I also went to the German side of things for two reasons. 1) So much more to choose from. 2) I’m tending to forget the German language, my mother tongue after all, when I spend too much time in the English-speaking realm. So, every once in a while, it needs to be a book in German.

The Spanish Bride by Georgette Heyer (3.2 Stars)

The Spanish Bride by Georgette Heyer (3.2 Stars)

I have to be honest. In this book, I didn’t get what I expected, which was romance, but instead I got a historically pretty accurate retelling of the campaign Lord Wellington fought in Spain during the Napoleonic War. (Kind of a big reminder of my master’s thesis, btw.) However, I never thought to stop reading this book, because the writing style was so amazing that I never even cared that this book was about something that neither interested me much, nor I knew much about.

“Bless my soul,” whispered the old barman. “Harry Potter… what an honour.”

The thing about your favourite childhood/teen book is that you read it so many times, and in that period since you last read it, you’ve built it up in your mind, making it better and grander, that reading it again will unavoidably end in disappointment. But even though it’s not quite what my mind made it out to be over the years, it is one of the best books I have ever read!

The problem was, strange things often happened around Harry and it was just no good telling the Dursleys he didn’t make them happen.

Vielen Dank an NetGalleyDE, dass ich das Buch in meine Sammlung aufnehmen durfte. Dafür revanchiere ich mich gerne mit einem Kommentar!

Utopia by Thomas More (3.7 Stars)

Utopia by Thomas More (3.7 Stars)

I’m not quite sure why I’ve decided to read this book. Probably because I’ve heard of it one too many times. Plus, there is the concept of Utopia that I have so often considered and tried to find a solution, so I wondered what other people made of it – especially in a title that has survived for centuries. Finishing it, I wasn’t too sure about More’s concept and just how serious he was about it.
